GPIO

A GPIO is a generic, initially unused pin on a chip. By programming, the user can decide whether the pin should be used at all and if that is the case whether to use it as an input or an output.

The advantage of GPIOs is their flexibility. GPIOs are therefore often used if there is limited space for pins, for example on a FPGA.

A group of – usually eight – combined GPIOs is called a GPIO port. It is addressed as a single port.
