Back Focal Distance

The back focal distance is the mechanical distance between the mating surface of a lens on the housing of a camera and the camera sensor.

In order to project an object onto the sensor sharply, the rear focus of a lens must be in the middle of the sensor. For this reason, the back focal distance is precisely defined for each of the various standard mounts (C-mount, CS-mount, F-mount, etc.).
